Grand Ave Gandalf

I can’t seem to avoid alliteration. I just love it. So the current tagline of this blog is “Looking for Rivendell in Rochester, NY.” Another one that will be up there some day will be “The Wisdom of Gandalf on Grand Ave.” Or maybe, “The Grace of Gandalf on Grand Ave.”

We’re turning here to a more Rochester-centered, localist blog, which will be a synthesis of the sorts of theological and political reflections I used to do with “Restless Reformer” (a perturbed paleo-orthodox preacher; an agitated ancient-future announcer; see?) with a commitment to this place. The “we” is not the royal “we” – I’m hoping someone else joins me here soon, but I can’t make any announcement until that person agrees, if that person does.

For those who don’t know it, almost two years ago, Tricia, Sophia and I moved to Grand Ave in Rochester, NY. It’s one of the very few moments in my life I felt a certain “call” from God. On the whole, the biblical model doesn’t show a whole lot of direct-messages from God, and there’s none of this nonsense we hear nowadays, where angst-filled teens say things like, “I’m just not sure if God’s telling me to break up with her, or if it’s just me…”  God’s not that bad at communicating.

This change in overall focus here will, I hope, be more effective and helpful for non-Rochesterians than my former musings here, because you’ll get to follow our journey doing urban ministry. So if you’re still subscribed here, please hang around a little longer. I’ll still go on political rants and write theological pieces; I’m just going to try to bring it straight to my own home as often as possible.

There’s a little more assonance in “Grand Ave Gandalf”! Sounds good, actually.

Good point! Well, I like assonance, too, so it works well.
