Remember all those beer reviews I was doing? They seem to have gone the way of Fred the Fundamentalist (meaning, a great plan that fizzled out). The good news is, both beer and Fred are on their way back. I’ve had a Fred post brewing (haha) in my mind for some time, and I’m making a trip to Beers of the World in the near future (my wife got me a gift card for my birthday – she’s a great woman). For now, here’s a drive-by beer discussion:
St. Patrick’s Day (my wife’s birthday) was a good beer night. The evening was spent at MacGregor’s Grill and Tap Room. I started with the obligatory Guinness and then switched to Smithwick’s before seeing a sign on the wall – “The All-Irish Black and Tan.” I had never heard of it before, and I had to have it. It’s a black and tan made with Guinness and Smithwick’s (instead of Bass), and it was yummy. I finished the night off on a lighter note with a Magic Hat #9.
I’ve recently discovered that my local Wegman’s has more selections in the coolers. I had no idea. I thought all the options were in the window. So more weekly options have been opened to me; I’m currently finishing off a 6 pack of Magic Hat Fat Angel, their pale ale. Without all the details, I’d give it a B+. Good stuff. (By “currently finishing off,” I do not mean, “Right now, at 9am,” just for the record. I’m at work.)
Wegman’s is also carrying Wolavers organic beers, which I’ve just learned comes from the same brewery as Otter Creek – and I like Otter Creek. They carry the pale ale, the india pale ale, and the brown ale, and I’ve just discovered a local cafe that has the oatmeal stout on tap. I’ll have to try all those in the near future.
Rohrbach’s has been filling growlers for me lately, too – American Pilsner (A)Â two nights ago, and there’s a growler of Vanilla Porter (A) waiting for me this weekend.Â
There’s more to say, including reviews of the beers I had while in California – but I’ll do a separate California Beers post soon.

I have some fodder for your Fred post. I stumbled on some fundys who say C.S. Lewis is a child of the devil because his satanic talking animals drink alcohol and smoke pipes with children. “human sacrifice…dogs and cats…living together…mass hysteria!”
Had some Sam’s club beer, Luekenkuegel or something like that, in a variety pack. It was very good (had a honey wheat lager and a dark cream ale). Who woulda thunk it?
Chris, never, never would have expected Sam’s club beer to be good. Very interesting!
Ooh, that’s a good one with C.S. Lewis. I think I’ll plan that sort of Fred post for just prior to the release of the last Harry Potter book this summer. That would fit nicely with what I plan to do then.

leinie’s is good beer wherever you buy it. i was tickled to find my favorite wisconsin beer available at sam’s as well. but that’s about all there is to write home about from their aisles. leinie’s red has been my favorite for a while now, but they have numerous other flavors.
Ah, so it’s not “Sam’s Club Beer,” it’s Wisconsin beer at a good price at Sam’s. That makes more sense.
Time to head to Sam’s, I guess!
Yeah–oops. Should have been more specific. Not “Sam’s Club Breweries” beer; but a beer they’re now carrying.
And while you’re at Sam’s, pick me up a 50 pack of toilet paper and some Capri Sun, please.
Travis, If your beers of the world place has it, you should try James Boag’s Premium – made right here in Tasmania. Has won numerous international beer awards.

Mmmmmm beer… I actually had some Israeli beer last week if you can believe it. Leyla it was called, a very nice lager. The nice thing about Las Vegas is that we have some fine micro-breweries as well as stores that have a good selection of Barley Pop.
If you can find Stone Brewing Pale Ale try it, it’s excellent.

Hehe….true, true. In my defense…I’m probably going to have to delete all beer review posts in a year anyway. Don’t want school administrations Googling me and finding that sort of stuff before my interviews.
I have been rating beers in the RateBeer crapplication on Facebook, however.
